John Chong
Investment Manager
John has over 24 years experience in the finance industry, initially in Institutional equity sales and research where he worked for Credit Lyonnais May and Mellor as well as Macquarie Equities. During this time John originated and lead-managed a number of large corporate transactions including equity raisings and two public take-overs with a combined value in excess of $400m. Following this John successfully established the NSW operations of WA’s then largest broker, Hartley Poynton Limited where he held the role of Chief Executive – NSW.
John then acquired a large stake in a publicly listed investment company, Resource and Industry Limited where as Managing Director he oversaw a number of transactions which more than doubled net tangible assets over a 2 year period. During this time John also undertook additional consulting work with a large New York based emerging markets hedge fund focussing on opportunities generated in Latin America during the Mexican Peso Crisis.
Following this John worked as the Asian Regional manager for Oppenheimer Emerging Markets Fund which was then the second largest emerging markets hedge fund with net assets exceeding US$1.1bn. Based in Bermuda, John managed over US$300m of investments in Asia including substantial short positions during the Asian crisis as well as building strategic stakes in Korean Banks and conglomerates some of which rose over 10 times over the following 18 months. John’s particular interest and expertise is in macro driven events and their impact on asset markets and the resources sector.
John holds a Bachelors Degree in Economics (Sydney University), a Masters Degree in Applied Finance (Macquarie University) and a Bachelors Degree in Science (Sydney University) where he studied geology, chemistry, biology and environmental science.
